■ The position
- Vacancy type: Assistant Academic Personnel (AAP) — 50% research, 50% teaching
- Departments: WE09 Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Ghent University Belgium (PhD degree affiliation), and KR01 Environmental Technology / Food Technology / Molecular Biotechnology at GUGC (research assistant)
- Contract: 2 years, renewable every two years after evaluation
- Occupancy rate: 100%

■ Who they are looking for
- PhD in Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Molecular Biotechnology, Crop Science or a related field
- A strong publication record in plant molecular biology and substantial knowledge of plant hormone signalling pathways
- Preferred: hands-on lab experience producing transgenic plants, plus core molecular biology skills — cloning, construction, qRT-PCR, protein purification and enzymatic analyses
- An independent researcher with strong self-learning ability who can also mentor PhD and bachelor students and work well in a team
- Excellent command of English: a Bachelor's degree or higher from an English-speaking country, or TOEFL iBT 85 or above, or IELTS 6.5 or above
- Strong teaching and communication skills, and willingness to take part in GUGC's educational programmes
- Conference participation and other extra-curricular training is a plus
■ What you will do
Research — about 50% of the time
- Study the signal transduction pathway of phytohormones, unravelling the crosstalk between ABA and ethylene from an evolutionary perspective
- Work with Arabidopsis and Liverwort at the molecular level
- Present results at conferences, help organise academic conferences and apply for research funding
- Publish in peer-reviewed international journals
Teaching — about 50% of the time
- Mentor bachelor and PhD students at GUGC
- Teach the practical parts of undergraduate courses: General Biology, Plant Biology, Molecular Biology, Plant Physiology and Integrated Practicum 1, including wet-lab and dry-lab exercises
- Assist with grading, examinations and the other educational duties of the research centre
- Help a professor at the GUGC Plant Biotechnology Research Centre develop and expand research projects
