Getting set up: ARC, banking & phone

If you are new to Korea, here is the usual order of things:

1. Alien Registration Card (ARC)

If you are staying more than 90 days, register at your local immigration office. Book an appointment on HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr Bring your passport, passport photos, the application form, the fee, and proof of address or school/work enrolment. Your ARC unlocks most other services.

1. Phone

A prepaid SIM can usually be bought with just your passport (including at the airport). Monthly (postpaid) plans normally need an ARC. Big carriers: SKT, KT, LG U+. Budget MVNOs ("altteul" plans) are cheaper.

1. Bank account

Many banks let you open a basic account with your passport, but online banking and transfers often require an ARC. Common banks: KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori, Hana, NH. Bring your passport, ARC if you have it, and your phone number.
