If you are new to Korea, here is the usual order of things:
- Alien Registration Card (ARC)
If you are staying more than 90 days, register at your local immigration office. Book an appointment on HiKorea (
www.hikorea.go.kr Bring your passport, passport photos, the application form, the fee, and proof of address or school/work enrolment. Your ARC unlocks most other services.
- Phone
A prepaid SIM can usually be bought with just your passport (including at the airport). Monthly (postpaid) plans normally need an ARC. Big carriers: SKT, KT, LG U+. Budget MVNOs ("altteul" plans) are cheaper.
- Bank account
Many banks let you open a basic account with your passport, but online banking and transfers often require an ARC. Common banks: KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori, Hana, NH. Bring your passport, ARC if you have it, and your phone number.
Processes change and branches vary — always check the latest official information.
