What do I need?
- Application forms 1 and 2, printed from Uway Apply after you apply online Apply
- Bachelor's degree or expected-graduation certificate: original, notarised translation, apostille, legalisation, or CHSI report
- PhD: your master's degree certificate, the same way
- Transcripts for every degree, showing grades, credits and years of study
- Language certificate, or [Form 1] Confirmation of Academic Capability sent by your prospective advisor
- Forms 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8: records release, academic background, personal statement, family information, personal information consent Forms
- Financial proof: a bank balance certificate of 16,000,000 won, [Form 6] from your advisor, or a scholarship certificate
- Copy of your passport, valid six months past admission
- Parents' passports and a family relationship or birth certificate showing names, nationalities and relationships, notarised
- Alien registration card, if you live in Korea
- [Form 7] Doctoral program recommendation letter, if applicable
ORIGINALS ONLY, on A4, in the listed order. Copies, scans and email are refused, and nothing is returned.
Notarised documents, translations and apostilles must be issued within six months of submitting.
Papers must ARRIVE at the Office of International Affairs by the deadline, in person or by post.
The fee is 70,000 won. It comes back only in a few cases, with proof, such as a disaster or a hospital stay. The online service charge never comes back.
For the D-2 visa you need your own bank certificate of 16,000,000 won: Form 6 does not count there.
PhD applicants changing field add [Form 7], a recommendation from the department head.
Documents in other languages need a notarised translation.

All requirements
- You and both parents hold non-Korean nationality, or you did all your schooling, primary school to university, outside Korea. Stateless people and dual Korean nationals do not count as foreigners
- A bachelor's degree, or one due before term, for a master's or integrated programme; a master's for a PhD. Your degree must come from a ministry-accredited school
- Judged 50% on language and 50% on your record. Interviews depend on the department
- Apply to ONE department only. Two applications make both invalid
- A bank balance of 16,000,000 won in your or a parent's name issued within 30 days of applying, a professor's support letter [Form 6], or a scholarship certificate. Form 6 cannot be used for the visa
- First-semester scholarships: a Global Scholarship every admit is considered for, and full waivers for TOPIK 6 or with a prospective advisor (SRS), with no separate form. New PhD students can also get a full waiver, but must send a separate form (dates to come). Awards change with the budget
- FIND A PROFESSOR FIRST. Most engineering departments require [Form 1], a Confirmation of Academic Capability that a prospective Chonnam advisor sends to the international office
- Mechanical, and Environment and Energy Engineering, ask an English score as well as Form 1. Electronics and Computer Engineering, and Intelligent Electronics and Computer Engineering, ask TOPIK 3 or TOEFL iBT 71 / IELTS 5.5, plus Form 1
- Industrial Engineering: TOPIK 4 and [Form 1]
- Civil and Environmental Engineering (Yeosu) only takes applicants with a bachelor's or master's in environmental engineering
