What can I study?

Published by Hongik University. Which of these a scholarship covers is decided by the school.

What do I need?

• Self-checklist and the application printed from Jinhak; statement of purpose and study plan (about 2,000 characters each, Korean or English, entered online)
• Degree certificate with apostille or consular confirmation (China: apostilled certificate plus the CHSI verification report; Korea: original) and transcripts (four years; PhD also the master's), with a GPA conversion if none is printed
• One professor's recommendation submitted online by the professor (full-time, adjunct or visiting faculty); two plus the research pledges for the Global Scholarship
• Language certificate; Hongik institute proof if that is your route
• Passports of you and both parents and a family relation document (China: kinship certificate plus notarised hukou of you and your parents); overseas Koreans add full school records and an entry and exit record
• Portfolio: PDF up to ten pages and 50 MB; performing arts two MP4 videos of three minutes or less, uploaded to the Google form

THE BANK BALANCE IS 20,000,000 WON in your OWN name, issued on or after 4 January 2027, frozen until 31 March 2027, filed 4 January to 22 February for the Certificate of Admission (Chinese banks: ICBC, Construction, Agricultural or Bank of China; ARC holders a Korean bank). Global Scholarship admits file the supervisor's financial guarantee plus about 10,000,000 won instead.

Application fee 100,000 won plus 8,000 processing, refunded only if a unit does not open. Entrance fee 996,000 won in the first semester; health insurance appears on the bill as optional.

Every admitted international student gets 1,000,000 won off the first bill; TOPIK 4, 5 or 6 adds 30, 40 or 50% of the first semester's tuition, applied to the first semester's tuition (in Fall 2026 it was paid out to the student's Korean account after arrival).

Certificate of Admission within seven business days of complete documents; none after the semester starts.

All requirements

• A bachelor's (master's or integrated) or a master's (PhD). Eligible: you and both parents foreign since your primary school entry (no dual or stateless), or 16 years of schooling entirely abroad, or a registered North Korean defector
• KOREAN: TOPIK 3 (Art History 5), or level 3 at the Hongik institute, or a Korean-language degree from abroad; valid on 28 September 2026. TOPIK entrants reach TOPIK 4 by the third semester (one page says before the thesis review)
• OR ENGLISH: TOEFL iBT 59 (new scale 4 from 21 January 2026), IELTS 5.5, New TEPS 202 or TOEIC 700. Every department takes either score except Art History (TOPIK 5 only), but ALL classes are in Korean except at IDAS
• ENGLISH SCORE NOT NEEDED with a degree from: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada, Dominica, Fiji, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland
• Also exempt: Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa
• And: Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, Zambia and Zimbabwe. An English-medium degree from any other country does NOT exempt
• Selection on documents plus a portfolio where required (MFA programmes; PDF of up to ten pages; performing arts two videos); no interview. Several departments may be applied to with separate fees
• Global Scholarship track (full tuition): foreign nationals with a Hongik supervisor, a joint research pledge and plan, two recommendation letters, and a journal paper within three years; not for IDAS or the specialised schools
• No leave in the first semester; alien registration within 90 days; part-time work needs the International Student Support Office's confirmation; leaving Korea mid-semester unreported can cancel the D-2
